Teams were the Kenosha Comets, Racine (Battle Creek/Muskegon) Belles, Rockford Peaches, South Bend Blue Sox, Milwaukee (Grand Rapids) Chicks, Minneapolis Millerettes, Fort Wayne Daisies, Muskegon (Kalamazoo) Lassies, Peoria Redwings, Chicago Colleens and Springfield Sallies
    Founded by Philip K. Wrigley
Immortalized in the film 'A League of Their Own'
It was the WNBA of the 1940's.
It was formed only when Wrigley was afraid that Major League Baseball's play would be suspended due to World War II.
Its original intent was simply to add revenue to empty major league parks.
However, those parks suffered from low attendance while the smaller market teams flourished.
In the league's early years, it used larger balls and underhand pitching, which made it more resemble softball.
The players were required to attend charm school, wear skirts and be as feminine as possible.
Television killed this league, since it kept people from going out to attend the games.
    There's no crying in baseball.
It was the first opportunity for women to play professional baseball.
It helped keep the American interest in baseball going as most male ballplayers went to war.
In the league's latter years, the rules and equipment more resembled the men's version of baseball.
Though the end of World War II was credited with ending the league, attendance actually peaked a few years after the war.
Nearly a million fans attended its games in its peak season.
Jimmie Foxx was a manager for the Fort Wayne Daisies (Tom Hanks' character in 'League' was based on him).
