Why he might be annoying:

He is a one-hit wonder.
Thanks to 'Deliverance,' his hit is mainly associated with inbred hillbillies making Ned Beatty squeal like a pig.
The composer of 'Dueling Banjos,' Arthur Smith, had to sue to get songwriting credit and royalties.
Despite the 'From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' subtitle, the 'Dueling Banjos' album was actually 1963's 'New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass' with the hit single tacked onto it.

Why he might not be annoying:

He played on albums not just by the expected folk/folk-rock performers (Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, John Denver, Peter Paul & Mary) but also on records by Talking Heads and jazz musicians Bob James and Herbie Mann.
His song 'Shuckin the Corn' was sampled by the Beastie Boys.
He performed in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth at Riverside Church in New York City (2009).
