The Resume

    (September 8, 1911-December 29, 1975)
    Born in Clarksville, Texas
Outdoorsman, natural foods proponent and author
Wrote ‘Stalking the Wild Asparagus’ (1962), ‘Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop’ (1964), ‘Stalking the Healthful Herbs’ (1965), ‘Stalking the Good Life’ (1966) and ‘Stalking the Faraway Places’ (1973)

Why he might be annoying:

He left home at fifteen and road the rails as a hobo between odd jobs.
    He joined the Communist Party.
He failed at founding an agricultural cooperative in Indiana in the 1950s.
He became more famous as a pitchman for Grape Nuts cereal than as an author.
Lines like ‘Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible’ created a public image of him as a bark-chewing rustic.

Why he might not be annoying:

He first became interested in natural foods growing up when he had to forage for local plants and berries to supplement the family diet.
He renounced Communism after the Soviet invasion of Poland (1939).
He entered the University of Hawaii as a 36-year-old freshman and won the school’s creative writing prize.
He taught wilderness survival skills for Outward Bound.
He showed a sense of humor about his public image: when Sonny and Cher presented him with a wooden plaque, he took a bite out of it. (The plaque, of course, was an edible prop.)
