Why he might be annoying:

He is sometimes credited as the first African-American artist commissioned to paint the portrait of a U.S. president, when he’s not (that honor goes to Simmie Knox for Bill Clinton in 2000).
When he unveiled his portrait of President Obama in 2018, it received mixed reviews even among supporters and inspired numerous internet memes.
The unveiling drew renewed attention to some of his older paintings (most notably 'Judith and Holofernes,' which depicts a black woman holding a sword in one hand and the disembodied head of a white woman in the other).
He openly said of the ‘Judith’ painting: ‘It’s sort of a play on the kill whitey thing.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was raised by a single mother and was one of six siblings.
At the age of twelve, he was one of 50 American children who went to live and study art in Russia.
His 'Go' artwork is featured in Penn Station's concourse in New York City.
He is known for taking the saints, prophets, and heroes of Old Master paintings and replacing them with black men and women dressed in hip-hop or African attire.
President Obama said of his work: 'What I was always struck by whenever I saw his portraits was the degree to which they challenged our conventional views of power and privilege.'
