He was married three times, divorced twice.
He used his first wife's inheritance to finance his debut film.
He and Francois Truffaut were so star-struck when they interviewed Alfred Hitchcock that they accidentally walked into a fountain while leaving.
He called his 'The Twist' (1976) the second-worst film ever made.
He admitted to making one film solely because it was set in Alsace, France, and he wanted to sample the local cuisine.
He was running a film club out of a barn at age 12.
He used the profits from 'Le Beau Serge' and 'The Cousins' to finance films by other New Wave directors, including Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette.
President Nicolas Sarkozy compared him to Balzac (for 'the finesse of his social depiction') and Rabelais (for 'his humor and vividness').
He said philosophically about his films' uneven critical reception, 'You have to accept that sometimes you are the pigeon, and sometimes you are the statue.'
