He is a golf enthusiast and had a course built on his property.
He divorced his wife of 45 years.
He enrolled in law school with no intentions of practicing law and later dropped out of the program altogether.
He was widely considered a cheapskate owner, refusing to spend money on payroll and scouting resources.
When word of his divorce became public, he immediately returned back to his home state of Texas.
Why he might not be annoying
He and his wife adopted twins.
While he was considered a cheapskate, he was instrumental in the construction and financing of PETCO Park.
He donated his time and money to various charitable causes in and around the San Diego area.
Under his ownership, the Padres won four division titles and made a World Series appearance.
