    (May 8, 1941-April 15, 2005)
Birth name was John Fred Gourrier
Frontman for John Fred & the Playboy Band (aka John Fred & the Playboys)
Recorded 'Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)'
Died of complications from a kidney transplant at age 63
He was a one hit wonder.
He used his middle name for a stage name because he didn't want people screwing up the pronunciation of his last name.
Before the phrase 'blue-eyed soul' was coined, he and the band, who recorded works by Wilson Pickett, James Brown and Otis Redding were simply known regionally as 'those white boys doing black soul music.'
He admittedly said he wrote 'Judy' as a tongue-in-cheek reply to the Beatles' 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.'
He wrote, produced and sang commercial jingles for Greyhound Bus Lines, Decker Hot Dogs, the Dallas Mavericks, Ban Deodorant and the Louisiana Music Commission.
He became a high school baseball coach.
His father, Fred Gourrier, had played professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers.
He attended Southeastern Louisiana University on athletic scholarships, setting school records there in basketball and baseball that lasted for 34 years.
When he met Elvis Presley, the legend expressed admiration for his version of 'Boogie Chillun,' which he had heard on Wolfman Jack's radio show.
'Judy' replaced the Beatles' 'Hello, Goodbye' on top of the charts and stayed there for 2 weeks (January 20-27, 1968).
It was a #1 hit in 41 other countries.
He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame (1991).
He received the Louisiana Music Living Legend Award (1999).
