    Before entering politics, he worked as a tax collector.
    He said, 'The rewards given to ability in the USSR at all levels are far greater than those given to the employed in capitalist Britain' (1946).
    His term as prime minister was plagued by high unemployment and a succession of strikes.
    His government lost a vote of confidence (March 28, 1979), then went on to lose the election.
    As Foreign Secretary, he negotiated Britain's entry into the European Union.
    He was the first Prime Minister to have held the three leading Cabinet positions: Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary.
    He was married to his wife Audrey for 67 years until her death.
