Actress

The Resume

Why she might be annoying:

She began her career in her late 40's.
She had a needling 'church lady' voice.
This led to her being typecast usually as matronly scolds or schoolmarm gossips (or somewhere in between the two).
She liked to joke about deciding to pursue an acting career after 'my daughter went to college, the dog got fleas, and the maid quit, so I had to come to Hollywood!'
She had a small role in the pointless 'Psycho' remake with Vince Vaughn.
One of her first memorable roles was getting whacked in the jaw with a hairbrush by Jessica Lange during a scene in 'Frances.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She managed to project warmth while usually playing stern, 'cross' figures.
She started out doing local theater with her husband (his death led her to pursue it full-time).
She traveled with a touring company of Noël Coward's 'Fallen Angels,' playing the role of the maid.
She was active with Theatre West in North Hollywood, most notably playing Margaret Fielding in the a long-running production of 'Verdigris.'
She was extremely close friends with Robert Reed and his family, and was one of the few who privately learned of his homosexuality and illness.
Her 'face cream' scene with Robin Williams in 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' remains one of the funniest and most memorable scenes in a film that had a great deal of competition.
She had a memorable role as Mary Steenburgen's mother in an episode of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'
She never seemed bothered by starting so late in the game, telling an interviewer: 'This is gravy to me. It's a wonderful way to spend the last third of my life.'
