    (May 24, 1686-September 16, 1736)
    Birth name was Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
    Invented the alcohol thermometer (1709) and mercury thermometer (1714) as a means of measuring temperature
    Elected to the Royal Society (1724)
    Died in The Hague, Netherlands at age 50

Why he might be annoying:

    Born in Poland and spending most of his career in the Dutch Republic, he is considered a German physicist.
    He came from a well-to-do family on his mother's side.
    He was a merchant glassblower by trade before becoming a physicist.
    Though his invention preceded the Celsius thermometer by 33 years many European countries were quick to convert to the Celsius scale.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His parents most likely died from eating poisonous mushrooms.
    He reinvented his thermometer with a mercury base five years after his alcohol thermometer because he found its results more accurate.
    He became a renowned chemistry lecturer in Amsterdam.
    Though most English speaking countries converted to Celsius by the 1970's his scale is still used in the U.S. and Jamaica.
    His name is featured in a Ray Bradbury novel ('Fahrenheit 451') and a Michael Moore movie ('Fahrenheit 9/11').
