    Played with the bands of Red Nichols and Benny Goodman in addition to leading his own group
    Wrote 'The Gene Krupa Drum Method' (1938)
    Portrayed by Sal Mineo in 'The Gene Krupa Story' (1959)

    He took up drums because they were the cheapest instrument at the music store.
    He played in speakeasies as a teenager.
    He served three months in jail for marijuana possession (1943).

    His performance on Goodman's 'Sing, Sing, Sing' gave the world the drum solo.
    He helped develop modern hi-hat cymbals.
    Buddy Rich called him 'the beginning and end of all jazz drummers.'
    He was cited as an influence by Keith Moon, John Bonham and Neil Peart.
