    (April 3, 1885-September 7, 1954)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Birth name was Harry Conway Fisher
Journalist and sketch artist for the San Francisco Chronicle
Created the comic strip 'Mutt and Jeff' (1907)
Founded the Bud Fisher Film Corporation, which made over 300 Mutt and Jeff animated short films (1913-26)
He claimed credit as animator and director of the Mutt and Jeff films even though the work was done by other people.
As early as 1921, he hired assistants to do the artwork for the Mutt and Jeff strip.
He married a countess who filed for legal separation two years later on the grounds of cruelty, specifically complaining that he let her be 'neglected by his servants while they looked after a number of live frogs he maintained in their former apartment on Riverside Drive.'
He became increasingly reclusive later in life.
'Mutt and Jeff' was the first successful daily comic strip.
He was the first cartoonist to copyright his characters and establish that the strip belonged to him, not the newspaper.
He owned a stable of thoroughbred horses, one of whom won the Preakness Stakes (1924).
The Washington Post noted, 'The sharp pacing and sardonic wit in Fisher's work set the standard for every newspaper strip that would follow.'
