Why he might be annoying:

He was the first actor to win the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actor and didn't also get an Oscar nomination ('Breaking the Sound Barrier').
He was homophobic.
He had a pet parrot.
He turned down the lead role in the English language premiere of 'Waiting for Godot,' and regretted it for the rest of his life.
He said to Alec Guinness, 'Who can one hit if not one's friends?' and punched Guinness in the nose.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was considered (along with Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud) to be one of the three greatest Shakespearean actors of the twentieth century.
He gave definitive Shakespearean performances as Falstaff, Bottom and Sir Toby Belch.
He partnered with Laurence Olivier as co-artistic directors of the Old Vic Theatre in the 1940s.
He received a posthumous Oscar nomination ('Greystoke').
He said: 'Acting is merely the art of keeping a large group of people from coughing.'
