    (March 23, 603-August 28, 683)
    Born in Palenque, Mexico
Full name is K'inich Janaab' Pakal
    King of Palenque (July 25, 615-August 28, 683)
Before his name was finally confirmed, he was referred to as ‘Pakal’, ‘Sun Shield’, ‘8 Ahau’, or ‘Pacal the Great’.
In order to improve his family’s reputation, he proclaimed himself, his own mom and predecessor, and his son Kan Balam.
After invading the city-state of Pomona, he captured its leaders for sacrifice (659).
    His name means ‘The Shield’.
He became king at the age of 12, when Palenque was frequently invaded from Calakmul and Pomona.
He was looked down upon for inheriting the throne from his mother rather than from a male predecessor.
He built many buildings, including the Palace of Palenque, that became fine examples of Mayan architecture.
He expanded Palenque’s power to the western part of the Maya lands.
His casket lid attracted many people because it depicts scenes of Mayan religion.
