Why he might be annoying:

    He is the least known person to appear on U.S. paper currency.
    He is always known with his middle initial.
    He constantly changed his political affiliation - he was a Whig, antislavery Liberal, Free Soil, Republican
    He put his own picture on the $1 bill (1862).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He resigned as Secretary of the Treasury, because his strong anti-slavery views and black suffrage opinions were too strong for Lincoln (1864).
    He was a lawyer who defended escaped slaves.
    Despite not having a financial background, he was able to keep the Union afloat during the Civil War.
    John Thompson named his bank in Chase's honor (1877) which still exists today as Chase-Manhattan Bank.
    He appears on the $10,000 bill.
    Northern Kentucky University named their law school the Salmon P. Chase College of Law.
    His father died when he was nine and he was raised by his uncle.
