The Resume

    (April 6, 1963-April 25, 1964)
    Aired on ABC
    Hosted by Jack Linkletter
Presented folk musicians performing on college campuses

Why he might be annoying:

The producers refused to let Pete Seeger appear on the show because of his left-wing politics.
In response Joan Baez refused to appear and called on other folksingers to boycott the show.
Tom Paxton and Ramblin' Jack Elliott joined the boycott.
Prominent performers who did not state that they were joining the boycott but never appeared on the show included Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, and the Kingston Trio.
It got repetitious, with seemingly every episode including an appearance by the Limelighters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, the Brothers Four, or the Serendipity Singers (or sometimes two or more of them).
Ratings slipped significantly during the second season.
It was replaced by 'Shindig!' a pop and rock oriented music series that the network assumed would have broader appeal after the British invasion.
ABC erased its tapes of the show. (Although a 'Best of Hootenanny' DVD was compiled from kinescopes of several episodes.)

Why he might not be annoying:

It was staged in the round, with the audience surrounding the performers.
Seeger himself was against the boycott, viewing the show as an important venue for popularizing folk music.
Ats its peak, it drew 11 million viewers per episode, making it the second-most popular show on ABC (behind the medical drama 'Ben Casey').
When the show expanded to a full hour in its second season, it added slots for country and gospel performers and standup comedians.
Bill Cosby, Carly Simon, and Mama Cass Elliot made their network TV debuts on the show.
