U.S. Senator
    (October 11, 1950- )
    Born in Bothell, Washington
Birth name was Patricia Lynn Johns
US Senator from Washington (1993- )
A staffer claimed ‘The most interesting thing about Murray is how uninteresting she is.’
The Washington Post called her ‘one of the most prodigious earmarkers in the Senate.’
She was accused of supporting Osama bin Laden when she explained his support in the Middle East by saying that he had ‘been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building daycare facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. He's made their lives better. We have not done that.’
She was a former preschool and community college teacher.
When she travelled to the state capitol to protest cuts in education funding and a legislator told her she could not make a difference because she was ‘just a mom in tennis shoes,’ she adopted the phrase as a rallying cry in her successful election campaign for the state senate (1988).
Strom Thurmond reportedly tried to grope her in the Senate elevator (1994).
In an increasingly rare act of bipartisanship, she and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan negotiated a budget deal after years of Congressional gridlock (2013).
