Religious Figure

The Resume

    (circa 23 BC-37)
    Resided in Jerusalem
Chief of the Sanhedrin (Jewish supreme court) at the time of Christ's crucifixion (Circa 33 A.D.)
Appears in the books of Matthew and John in the New Testament

Why he might be annoying:

He is at the center of a controversy about whether the Bible mandates anti-Semitism.
According to the New Testament, he had Christ beaten, framed him for crimes, lobbied for his execution, and bribed Judas Iscariot to turn him in.
He is depicted as cynical and unscrupulous in church tradition.
The place where he allegedly lived is called ‘the Hill of Evil Counsel.'
He probably kissed up to Pontius Pilate and the rest of the Roman occupation.
He only got his high priest job because of his father-in-law's connections (nepotism).

Why he might not be annoying:

There is no evidence outside the Bible proving he was as bad as the Gospels say.
Many scholars think the Gospel authors exaggerated his flaws to get Jews to convert to Christianity.
There are even contradictions about him within the Gospels themselves.
Some claim he was simply trying to protect his religious tradition from rabble rousers.
He was regarded as the most powerful politician in Judea, next to Pontius Pilate.
He led the Sanhedrin through one of the most stable periods in its history.
The Roman governor Vitellius eventually kicked him off the court.
