The Resume

    (September 5, 1913-April 19, 1980)
    Born in Hammond, Indiana
Best known for portraying Lota the Panther Woman in 'Island of Lost Souls' (1932)
Also appeared in the films 'Murders in the Zoo' (1933), 'The Mad Game' (1933), 'School for Girls' (1934), 'The Lives of a Bengal Lancer' (1935), 'The Last Outpost' (1935), 'The Lion Man' (1936), 'The Sheik Steps Out' (1937), and 'Rascals' (1938)

Why she might be annoying:

She married Glen Rardin, the photographer credited with discovering her, separated from him, reconciled with him, and divorced him, in less than two years.
During filming of 'Island,' she would flub her lines whenever Rardin (then her fiancé) was present; eventually the producers banned him from the set.
She retired from the screen at age 25.
Gail Patrick, one of the runners up for 'Island of Lost Souls,' said that the Panther Woman role 'came to haunt [Burke] and ruin her chances for better roles.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was working as a dental assistant and part-time model when she won the part of Lota.
She reportedly beat out 60,000 other candidates to win a Paramount Pictures contest to be cast as Lota.
The final casting decision was made by a panel consisting of 'Lost Souls' director Erle Kenton and Hollywood heavyweights Cecil B. DeMille, Ernst Lubitsch, Norman Taurog, and Rouben Mamoulian.
She was described as having 'large and extremely expressive eyes.'
