    (August 6, 1910-September 14, 1999)
    Born in Wallasey, England, Kansas
Edited the films 'The Private Life of Henry VIII' (1933), 'Sanders of the River' (1935), 'Things to Come' (1935) and 'The Thief of Baghdad' (1940)
Directed the films 'For Those in Peril' (1944), 'Hue and Cry' (1947), 'Dance Hall' (1950), 'The Lavender Hill Mob' (1951), 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' (1953), 'The Divided Heart' (1954), 'Law and Disorder' (1958), 'The Battle of the Sexes' (1959), 'The Boy Who Stole a Million' (1960), 'He Who Rides a Tiger' (1964) and 'A Fish Called Wanda' (1988)
Directed episodes of the TV series 'Danger Man,' 'The Avengers' and 'Space: 1999'
His perfectionism sometimes grated, with one 'Space: 1999' producer calling him 'Perhaps the most difficult director I had to deal with.'
His brief Hollywood career ended after he clashed with star Burt Lancaster during the making of 'The Birdman of Alcatraz' and was replaced by John Frankenheimer (1962).
He said, 'I think making any picture is a rather masochistic experience.'
He was known for his great sense of pace and timing, a legacy of his years as an editor.
After a 23 year absence from the big screen, he made 'A Fish Called Wanda' with John Cleese and was nominated for Oscars for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
For the rest of his life, he delighted in telling how one of 'Wanda's producers got a call from a Hollywood studio executive asking, 'We've got a comedy we need a director for. Do you think your new young guy Crichton might be interested?'
