It has nicknames such as 'Wormtown,' 'Woo-town' and 'The Woo.'
It has been often mispronounced in many different ways (ie. 'war-chest-er').
It is overshadowed by Boston.
Between 1950 and 1980, its population went from 203,486 to 161,799 after its manufacturing base ceased operations.
It was struck by a hurricane (September 21, 1938) and a deadly tornado (June 9, 1953).
Six firefighters were killed in the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. fire after it was accidentally set off by a homeless man and his girlfriend (December 3, 1999).
The Agriculture Fairgrounds once hosted New England's largest Ku Klux Klan gathering.
It is home to the infamous Turtle Boy statue.

It is the city where Valentine's Day cards in the United States were first popularized.
Other inventions, including candlepin bowling, the monkey wrench and the envelope folding machine, were first made here.
The first public reading of the U.S. Declaration of Independence took place at its town hall (July 14, 1776).
It hosted the first national women's rights convention (October 23-24, 1850).
Lee Richmond recorded the very first Major League perfect game at the Worcester Agricultural Fairgrounds (June 12, 1880).
The Worcester Country Club hosted the first Ryder Cup, the 1925 U.S. Open and the 1960 U.S. Women's Open.
It is home to nine colleges.
It has dozens of Victorian-era buildings.
