The Resume

    (January 22, 1878-April 25, 1955)
    Born in Windsor, United Kingdom
Birth name is Laura Constance Hardie
Acted in 'Shadow of Doubt,' 'Little Lord Faunterloy,' 'Stage Door,' 'Susan and God,' 'Kitty,' 'The Perils of Pauline,' 'Rope,' and 'Whirlpool'
Acted in stage productions of 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' (1908), 'Anthony and Cleopatra' (1906), 'Samson' (1908-1909, 'Israel' (1909), 'Oliver Twist' (1912), 'Othello' (1914), 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' (1917), 'An Ideal Husband' (1918), 'The Matriarch' (1930), 'Camille' (1931), and 'Dinner at Eight' (1932 - 1933)

Why she might be annoying:

She was one of the most beautiful actresses to grace the West End, but she began her film career well into middle age and, as a result, is only remembered in maternal roles.
She made her stage debut at the age of three.
She gained more fame as an acting instructor and coach than as an actress in her own right.
Her career as an acting coach picked up with the advent of talking pictures.
She willed for Katharine Hepburn to 'inherit' her secretary after her death.
She starred in Beerbohm Tree's notorious Silent adaptation of 'Macbeth,' which flopped.
She received rave reviews for 'Dinner at Eight,' but was passed over for the film adaptation for Marie Dressler (perhaps the one role which could have made her a film star).

Why she might not be annoying:

Her portrayal of Nancy was viewed to be the definitive version in the early 20th Century.
Her first husband died in the influenza epidemic of 1918.
She became a lifelong friend and coach of Katharine Hepburn after co-starring with her in 'Stage Door,' ironically playing her drama coach in the film.
She also coached Hepburn during her World Shakespeare tour in the early 1950s.
She helped Paulette Goddard to perfect her Southern accent during her audition period for Scarlet O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind' (she very nearly got the part).
She was versatile, capable of doing both high drama and light comedy equally well.
She was also acting coach to Luise Rainer, Colleen Moore, Vivien Leigh, Audrey Hepburn, andMarilyn Monroe (three of whom won at least one Oscar)
