    (1906- )
    Born in Los Angeles, California
    Protestant religious movement
Founded in the early twentieth century in the United States
Usually dated to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles in 1906
Members are noted for experiencing what they call gifts of the Holy Spirit
Gifts include prophecy, speaking in tongues, the ability to heal others, etc
Noted for a very lively worship style
Associated with 'charismatics' with whom they share many traits and theological positions
Centered in the southeastern United States
Although it is fair to consider them a distinct movement, they are split into an infinite number of denominations/groups that disagree on just about everything, including what a Christian or Pentecostalist is, whether or not you have to speak in tongues, and even what speaking in tongues is.
A lot of the tackier TV evangelists are them.
Speaking in tongues is where members of the congregation babble (usually loudly) incoherently and are somehow communicating a message from God.
Snake handlers are part of them.
If speaking in tongues and other Gifts of the Holy Spirit are so important why didn't any of the Church Fathers, the Church of the Middle Ages, or the leaders of early protestantism say anything about it?
Jimmy Swaggart was one of them.
They cannot document one single solitary case of a prophecy/prediction coming true or someone being healed of a serious illness by them
Sarah Palin is one of them.
Is it any surprise that it got its start in Los Angeles, California?
Across the board, they emphasize high moral standards
Some groups believe that women should wear only dresses and keep their hair long.
They don't really care what other people think about them.
Their services are quite often a blast to attend.
Most of their services are racially integrated, rare in the South.
Many are strongly anti-war. Because Jesus, you know, said to love your neighbor, turn the other cheek, that kind of thing.
