Sports Team
In 1899, they had the worst season in major league history, going 20-134 for a .130 winning percentage.
Home attendance was so anemic they had to play their last 36 games on the road.
The pitcher for their final game was a hotel clerk who offered a box of cigars for the privilege.
    He lost 19-3.
Not surprisingly, the Spiders were one of four teams chosen for elimination when the National League contracted after the 1899 season.
Although remembered mostly for their disastrous 1899 season, they had seven straight winning seasons (1892-98).
Cy Young pitched his first no-hitter as a Spider (September 18, 1897).
They beat the Baltimore Orioles to win the Temple Cup, a World Series precursor that pit the #1 and #2 National League teams in post-season play (1895).
The Spiders' owners bought the St. Louis Perfectos (1898), decided the St. Louis team would draw more fans and shipped off all the Spiders' starters to St. Louis, setting the stage for the 1899 debacle.
The National League eventually banned such blatant conflicts of interest, but too late for the Spiders.
