    (April 8, 1818-January 29, 1906)
    King of Denmark (1863-1906)
He tried to marry Queen Victoria, but she refused him.
He married his second cousin, Luise of Hesse Kassel.
His wife (the niece of Denmark's King Christian VIII) had a greater claim to the Danish crown than he did, but women weren't allowed to inherit the throne.
He lost the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein to Austria and Prussia.
He never expected to become king, since he was far down in the Danish line of succession.
    He did gymnastics.
He often invited the writer Hans Christian Andersen to his home.
His daughter Alexandra married King Edward VII and became queen of England.
His daughter Dagmar married Tzar Alexander III and became Empress Marie of Russia.
His son William became King of Greece.
His grandson Haakon became king of Norway.
He is often called the 'father-in-law of Europe.'
