Why he might be annoying:

    He came to power by leading a coup against his father.
    He ruled as an absolute monarch who tolerated no dissent.
    In addition to being sultan, he held the positions of prime minister, supreme commander of the armed forces, minister of defense, minister of finance, and foreign minister.
    He married his first cousin.
    He became increasingly reclusive as he aged.
    He refused to publicly name a successor, instead leaving a sealed envelope with the name of the man he wanted to become sultan.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He abolished slavery (1970).
    He used the country’s oil revenue to fund a modernization program that included building schools and hospitals, paving hundreds of miles of roads, and establishing electrical and communications networks.
    Despite Oman being predominantly Muslim, he guaranteed freedom of religion and funded the construction of Catholic and Protestant churches and Hindu temples.
    He personally payed $1 million to secure the release of two American hikers who had been imprisoned in Iran (2011).
