Doctor
    (August 8, 1922-March 5, 2011)
    Born in Hernando, Argentina
    Doctor and biochemist
Founder of the medical school at the University of Santiago in Cuba (1962)
With Ernesto 'Che' Guevara toured Latin America by motorcycle (1951-52)
Wrote 'Travelling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary' (1978; first English translation, 2003)
Served as on-set adviser for the film 'The Motorcycle Diaries' (2003)
Had a cameo appearance in the film
He was far better known for his road trip with Che than any medical achievements.
Ironically, he said that the importance of the trip in shaping Guevara's political views was overstated.
Four decades after Guevara's death, he said, 'When I have doubts, I ask myself what would Ernesto say?'
He continued supporting Fidel Castro well after everyone else noticed that he was a repressive dictator presiding over a collapsing economy.
He was jailed a year for protesting against the government of Juan Peron.
A biography of Guevara said that Granado 'possessed a good sense of humor and a taste for wine, girls, literature and rugby.'
At the end of the road trip, he stayed in Caracas, Venezuela, to work in a lepers hospital.
He was denied a visa to attend the premiere of 'The Motorcycle Diaries' at the Sundance Film Festival.
