Military Personnel
    (October 6, 1573-November 10, 1624)
Born in Sussex, England, United Kingdom
    3rd Earl of Southampton
Named a Knight of the Garter (1603)
Fought in Ireland (1599-1601), Germany (1614) and the Netherlands (1624)
Member of the governing council for the Virginia Company
Modern scholars are not sure how his last name should be pronounced.
He was a 'chronic absentee' from the House of Lords.
He was temporarily banned from court after getting into a brawl with one of the Queen's equeries (1598).
He secretly married one of the Queen's ladies in waiting after knocking her up (1598).
He was imprisoned in the Tower of London for taking part in the Essex Rebellion to overthrow Elizabeth I (1601-03).
He was a significant patron of the arts.
Shakespeare dedicated the poems 'Venus and Adonis' and 'The Rape of Lucrece' to him, and he may have been the 'Fair Youth' of Shaksepeare's sonnets.
He backed Henry Hudson's search for the Northwest Passage.
His oldest son died of fever in the English military camp in the Netherlands; five days later, he died of the same cause.
