U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (April 13, 1955- )
    Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota
    Represents Florida’s 3rd District (Assumed office January 3, 2013)
    Republican
Member of the Tea Party Caucus

Why he might be annoying:

He challenged John Boehner for Speaker of the House, receiving two votes (2015).
He opposed raising the debt ceiling, claiming that America defaulting on its debts would ‘bring stability to the world markets,’ a position that even fellow Republican Rep. Reid Ribble called ‘crazy talk.’
He was one of four Representatives to vote against making lynching a federal hate crime.
He thinks the country should go back to only letting property owners vote.
He accosted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the Capitol over comments she made linking crime rates and poverty (July 20, 2020); according to a reporter for ‘The Hill’ who overheard the conversation, he called her ‘disgusting’ and ‘out of your freaking mind,’ then referred to her as a ‘fucking bitch’ as he walked away.
He issued a non-apology for ‘the abrupt manner of the conversation I had.’
He added, ‘I cannot apologize… for loving my God, my family, and my country,’ even though no one had asked him to apologize for any of those.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a veterinarian before entering politics.
In his upset campaign against twelve-term Representative Cliff Stearns, he had only one paid employee, first-time campaign manager Kat Cammack.
Despite what a popular internet meme claims, he never said a black person’s vote should count for 3/5 of a white person’s vote.
He announced he would not run for reelection in 2020, living up to a pledge to serve no more than eight years in government: ‘If that was good enough for George Washington, it’s good enough for me.’
