His voice was the inspiration for Fruit Loops mascot Toucan Sam.
He frequently feuded with producer Samuel Goldwyn, and sued him to be released from his contract.
He said: 'Fame has robbed me of my freedom and shut me up in prison, and because the prison walls are gilded, and the key that locks me in is gold, does not make it any more tolerable.'
He was divorced.
