Why he might be annoying
As a young pilot, he was reprimanded by his commander for misusing military equipment after landing his helicopter in front of his girlfriend's house.
His often impulsive behavior prompted an American official to call him an 'unguided missile.'
He pulled a handgun on an interviewer whose questions annoyed him.
He told a journalist, 'I admire Hitler because he pulled his country together when it was in a terrible state in the early 30s. We need four or five Hitlers in Vietnam.'
He left Vietnam one day after a rally in Saigon where he called people fleeing the country 'cowards.'
His return to Vietnam as a guest of the Communist regime alienated much of the Vietnamese exile community (2004).
Why he might not be annoying
He stopped the endless series of coups that had been plaguing South Vietnam since the assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem and brought some stability to the country.
He clamped down on corruption in the government and military.
He had his salary as prime minister cut in half (to $6,500).
He said of his 2004 return, 'It's time to close a dark chapter of Vietnam history and open a new one.'
