    He was arrested while demonstrating as part of a broadcasters' strike (1959).
    He ran over and killed a homeless man (February 6, 1977) and was later fined $25 for failing to wear his glasses while driving.
    It was revealed that his female companion in the car on the night of the accident was not his wife, but his secretary (who he later married after his wife divorced him).
    His referendum on Quebec independence was defeated 40%-60% (1980).
    He chain smoked.
    He wore his hair in a comb over.
    He was a war correspondent for the CBC during World War II (when he was with the first unit of Americans to liberate the Dachau concentration camp) and the Korean War.
    He threatened to resign as premier when the language minister tried to completely eliminate English-language public schools.
    Under his leadership, Quebec became the first province to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (1977).
    He liked playing Scrabble and cribbage.
    He was named a Grand Officer of the French Legion of Honor.
    After his death, over 100,000 people viewed his body lying in state.
