He isn't as well remembered as other accomplished Olympians in spite of his achievements.
In 1988, he tried to duplicate Mark Spitz' feat of winning seven gold medals in one Olympics but could only muster five.
For a period after his retirement, he was unhappy as he went on the typical ex-Olympian route of being a motivational speaker.

As of 2010, he is tenth all-time in career Olympic medals.
He has a master's in teaching from Lewis and Clark College.
He worked as a math teacher in Hawaii.
