Recorded the albums ‘The Hampton Hawes Trio’ (1956), ‘This Is Hampton Hawes’ (1956), ‘All Night Sessions, Vols. 1-3’ (1956-57), ‘Everybody Likes Hampton Hawes’ (1958), ‘Here and Now’ (1966), ‘The Séance’ (1968), ‘Universe’ (1972), ‘Blues for Walls’ (1973), ‘Playin’ in the Yard’ (1974) and ‘As Long As There’s Music’ (with Charlie Haden, 1977)

Why he might be annoying:

He said his religious parents – a Presbyterian minister and a church organist – refused to play his records (although they did hang framed album covers on the wall).
His career was derailed when he was sentenced to ten years in prison for heroin possession (1958).
Some older fans were put off when he experimented with electric piano in the 70s.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named ‘New Star of the Year’ in Down Beat magazine (1956).
He was a model prisoner, which resulted in him collecting 18 recommendations from the prison staff when he successfully petitioned President John F. Kennedy for clemency (1963).
His autobiography, ‘Raise Up Off Me,’ won the Deems Taylor Award for music writing (1975).
