    Accusations that McCarthy pressured the Army for special treatment for Schine led to the Army-McCarthy hearings (1954)
    Died in the crash of a private plane piloted by his son
    He and Roy Cohn toured Europe at taxpayers' expense looking for subversive literature in US Information Agency libraries.
    After Schine was drafted, Cohn demanded that Schine be given light duties and extra leave and that he not be assigned overseas.
    Cohn allegedly threatened to 'wreck the Army' if his demands were not met.
    He and Cohn unsuccessfully sued NBC for defamation over their portrayal in the TV movie 'Tailgunner Joe' (1977).
    During the hearings, he was the most famous private in the US Army.
    He made a cameo appearance in Batman (1968).
    He was executive producer of the Oscar-winning film 'The French Connection' (1971).
    He married a former Miss Universe, Hillevi Rombin of Sweden.
