TV Series
    (April 17, 2011-March 16, 2016)
    Created by Jennifer Graziano
Original main cast (top to bottom): Drita D’Avanzo, Carla Facciolo, Karen Gravano, Renee Graziano
The wives, daughters, nieces, and granddaughters of Mafia liaisons on Staten Island, dealing with the aftermath of a bust
Predictably – as with another series, to which it was compared – Italo-American leagues were up in arms about how they were portrayed in the media.
The camera-surveillance effects used to introduce the players was considered a cliche.
Second season main cast member Angela Raiola (‘Big Ang’) went on to have her own show — an honor usually accorded an original player.
All of the ‘wives’ sound like stogie addicts.
Expect to hear ‘I’m done with the drama’ and declarations of ‘war’ — a lot.
The Chicago spinoff – where mob activity is legendary – lasted only one season.
Renee’s sister Jennifer had the original concept for the program.
Their backgrounds and issues are deeper than those of the social-climbing Real Housewives.
To the relatives of those murdered by the cast’s relatives, ethnic stereotypes are the least of their issues (especially as D’Avanzo is actually of Albanian lineage).
They are struggling to overcome the stereotypes Italian leagues feel have been ascribed to them.
At the second-season reunion, an intense flare-up on the set managed to stun host Joy Behar – a notorious yenta – into silence.
It is not for the faint of heart.
