Birth name is Charles Sherwood Stratton
Height at age 18 was 2 feet, 6 inches
Continued growing as an adult, measuring 3 feet, 4 inches the year of his death
Performed all over the world as a singer, dancer and impersonator for P.T. Barnum
Why he might be annoying
His stage name came from a children's story.
P.T. Barnum created a bogus history for him as a European aristocrat.
Some might say he allowed Barnum to exploit him for years.
He and his wife (also a little person) traveled with an orphaned baby as a publicity stunt.
They gave up the baby when it grew bigger and hence bad for their image.
Why he might not be annoying
His parents were humiliated by him and handed him over to Barnum at age four.
His work as a performer brought him wealth and international fame.
He remained lifelong friends with Barnum and once saved him from bankruptcy.
His 1863 ‘fairy wedding' to Lavinia Warren was one of the year's most fashionable events.
Abraham Lincoln held a reception for him afterwards.
Several thousand mourners showed up for his funeral.
