Best known for his Lieder (art songs), including ‘Erlkönig,’ ‘Die schöne Müllerin’ and ‘Winterreise’
Wrote piano works, chamber music and the ‘Unfinished Symphony’

Why he might be annoying:

His nickname was ‘Tubby.’
His fingers were so fat that he couldn’t play the piano.
He was a draft dodger.
When he was 21, he reportedly fell in love with an 11-year-old girl.
He got syphilis, probably from a prostitute.
He wrote operas, but they aren’t any good.

He grew up poor.
Ten of his brothers and sisters died as children.
He was well-liked.
He was a hard worker.
He wrote the famous version of ‘Ave Maria’ that is still sung today.
He is buried next to Beethoven.
He may have died from drinking mercury, which was how syphilis was treated at the time.
