    (December 29, 1896-January 6, 1974)
    Born in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico
Birth name was Jose David Alfaro Sisqeiros
    Social Realist painter
Known for his murals and frescoes
Works include 'Burial of a Worker' (1923), 'Tropical America' (1932), 'Echo of a Scream ' (1937), 'Portrait of the Bourgeoisie' (1940) and 'The People to the University, the University to the People' (1952)
    He was an unrepentant Stalinist.
He led a 20-man hit squad in an unsuccessful assassination attempt against Leon Trotsky.
He may have planned the attack to get back in the Communist Party's good graces after being accused of misappropriating Party funds.
Trotsky biographer Isaac Deutscher described him as a man for whom 'art, revolution and gangsterism were inseparable.'
He certainly did more than pay lip service to his ideals, fighting against the Huerta dictatorship in Mexico and against Franco's fascists in Spain.
He was frequently jailed for his political activities. (But not, oddly enough, for the attempted murder of Trotsky.)
While exiled, he taught an art workshop in New York City that was attended by a young Jackson Pollock.
Fellow artist Jose Revueltas described him as 'titanic as his paintings.'
