Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of high school at thirteen to play mandolin and tour with a folk band called Sod Hut and the Buffalo Chips.
He dropped his last name because it sounded too much like ‘Mud’ over a PA system.
He complained in 2016, ‘Who would have ever thought people would emulate 80s pop?’
Googling his name gets almost as many hits for Colin James Hay as for him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He got his big break when he stepped in after the scheduled opening act for a Stevie Ray Vaughan concert in his hometown failed to show up (1984).
Vaughan was impressed enough to invite James to perform with him during the encore, then join the rest of the tour as the opening act.
His eponymous debut album set a record as the fastest-selling album in Canada.
He gave a command performance for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Saskatchewan (2005).
He noted that blues is ‘the only genre where you can maintain a young profile at the age of 53.’
