    He was known for his paintings of grotesque faces and masks.
    He was a gloomy, depressed youth, but cheered up fast when he became rich and famous.
    He claimed the goddess Venus attended his birth, saying ‘she smelled pleasantly of salt water.’

    He suffered from ulcers.
    His family refused to let him marry his girlfriend.
    He influenced many later painters.
    He was made a baron by the king.
    Belgium put his picture on their 100-franc note (1995).
    They Might Be Giants wrote a catchy song about him.
