    Film credits include ‘Touchez pas au grisbi (1953),’ ‘The Threepenny Opera (1963),’ ‘Army of Shadows (1969),’ ‘The Calachi Papers (1972)’ and ‘Les Miserables (1982)’
    He dropped out of school at age eight and drifted from one job to another.
    Though he was Italian, most of his films were French.
    An injury put an end to his boxing aspirations.
    Most of his roles were either detectives or gangsters.
    He never tried to become a French citizen.
    With the European championship in 1950, he made a name for himself as a wrestler.
    Because one daughter was born disabled, he created a foundation to assist the handicapped.
    He received his first significant film role only in his mid-30s.
    His portrayal of Jean Valjean in earned him a Cesar nomination (France’s answer to an Oscar).
    The French post office honored his likeness on a 1998 stamp.
