    Known for depicting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England
    Created about 1,000 paintings and 8,000 drawings
    Largest collection (400 works) held at the Lowry in Salford in Greater Manchester
    He neglected the upkeep of his house until the landlord repossessed it (1948).
    He set a record for the most rejected British honors, with five (including a knighthood).
    He produced a series of erotic drawings that remained secret until after his death.
    He was called 'probably the most faked British artist, his deceptively simple style of painting making him a soft target for forgers.'
    He was named an official artist for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
    A retrospective at the Royal Academy shortly after his death attracted a record number of visitors for an exhibition of a British artist.
    He inspired a pair of British hit singles, 'Pictures of Matchstick Men' by Status Quo (1968) and 'Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs' by Brian and Michael (1978).
    He said, 'You don't need brains to be a painter, just feelings.'
