It comes from the bible, a name God instructed the prophet Isaiah to give his newborn son (and the longest proper name in the whole book to boot).
When he converted to Islam, he had the chance to simplify or change it, but left it alone, so most folks just call him Ali.
As a side project, he fancies himself as a hip-hop artist, having collaborated with Talib Kweli.

He earned a his MFA degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
He's performed in numerous plays, including Shakespeare - inspired by his father who is a musical theatre vet.
He's been in episodes of the TV series 'NYPD Blue,' ' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and
'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.'
He was a regular on the critically acclaimed TV series 'Crossing Jordan' and 'The 4400.'
In 2011, he was nominated for an Image Award for his dramatic portrayal of an innocent convict in 'The Wronged Man.'
