The Resume

    (August 30, 1948-December 4, 1969)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Became an NAACP youth organizer after high school graduation
Joined and became deputy chairman of the Black Panther Party of Illinois
F.B.I. file opened on him in 1967
Killed along with Mark Clark on a raid of his Chicago apartment by a State's Attorney's Office tactical unit of cops and agents
Subject of the 1971 documentary 'The Murder of Fred Hampton'
Chicago City Council unanimously approved December 4, 2004 as 'Fred Hampton Day'

Why he might be annoying:

    He stockpiled weapons.
He was convicted of stealing $72 worth of ice cream in 1969 but bonded out and never served prison time.
He was outspoken enough to grab J. Edgar Hoover's attention to the tune of a 12 volume, 4,000+ word file on his activities.
One of his bodyguards was an F.B.I. mole who spiked his drink with secobarbitol before the raid took place.
A 2006 proposal to rename a portion of a Chicago street 'Chairman Fred Hampton Way' was vehemently opposed by the city's Fraternal Order of Police.

Why he might not be annoying:

He helped garner a non-aggression pact amongst Chicago's street gangs.
He was for equality for all races and coined the phrase 'rainbow coalition,' later used by Rev. Jesse Jackson.
He organized the Free Breakfast Program for poverty level children in Chicago.
The raid was described as a gun battle, but later revealed that of the 99 shots fired only one came from a Black Panthers member (Mark Clark fired a shotgun blast after taking a bullet).
Another party member overheard one cop say he was still alive, then two shots rang out and another cop stated he isn't now (autopsy results show two point blank shots to his head).
After over 10 years of legal battles in a $47.7 million civil suit against the city, state, and federal governments filed by the families of Hampton and Clark the case was settled for $1.85 million.
Noam Chomsky stated, 'Fred Hampton was an effective organizer in the Chicago ghetto. He was one of the main targets of the F.B.I. terror campaign, and they ended up killing him.'
