His most successful song failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.
He got his break as a teenager singing 'Let Me Call You Sweetheart' to Marie Wilson every night, until his voice changed in the middle of a performance.
His repertoire mostly consisted of covers of well-known songs rather than original material.

When he learned he needed a bone-marrow transplant to treat an inoperable form of cancer, in 1992, the Foundation for Artists, Musicians and Entertainers held a two-night fund-raiser for his medical expenses.
