Why he might be annoying:

His variety show was a fill-in summer replacement for The Danny Kaye Show.
His most successful song failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.
He got his break as a teenager singing 'Let Me Call You Sweetheart' to Marie Wilson every night, until his voice changed in the middle of a performance.
His repertoire mostly consisted of covers of well-known songs rather than original material.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a decorated U.S. Marine veteran.
His song 'Cold,' released in 1967, topped the charts for two weeks at the end of that year.
He was reportedly Elvis' favorite singer.
He invented the Aqua-peller, an underwater propulsion device.
He appeared thirty times as a guest on The Tonight Show with each of the first three hosts (Paar, Allen and Carson).
When he learned he needed a bone-marrow transplant to treat an inoperable form of cancer, in 1992, the Foundation for Artists, Musicians and Entertainers held a two-night fund-raiser for his medical expenses.
