Why he might be annoying:

He said, 'I was the only player ever traded for a fence.' (The International League Baltimore Orioles bought his contract from the Class C Martinsburg team for the $3,000 that Martinsburg needed to erect a fence around their field.)
After Connie Mack paid a record amount to acquire him from the Orioles, he was dubbed 'the $100,600 Lemon' when he posted a losing record in his first season in the Majors.
An A's teammate said, 'All he seemed to have was a fastball and a mean disposition.'
He was so irritable that he would nail his own teammates with a pitch if they got good hits off of him during batting practice.
As a batter, he struck out a record 593 times.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had the league's best ERA a record nine times.
Twice his ERA was more than two runs better than the league average.
He twice won the pitching triple crown, leading the league in ERA, strikeouts and wins (1930-31).
Sportswriter Bugs Baer wrote, 'Lefty Grove could throw a lamb chop past a wolf.'
He paid to send two boys from his hometown through college.
In 1960, he received six write-in votes for the Baseball Hall of Fame -- despite having already been inducted 13 years earlier. (I'm not sure if this really qualifies as 'Not Annoying,' but the profiles don't have a 'Just Plain Weird' section.)
