Composer
    (February 21, 1836-January 16, 1891)
Birth name was Clément Philibert Léo Delibes
Best known for his opera ‘Lakmé (1883)’
Also wrote the ballets ‘Coppélia (1870),’ ‘Sylvia (1876)’ and ‘La Source (1866)’
He is mainly remembered for one opera, ‘Lakmé,’ and even that isn’t performed much today.
A duet from the opera has been overused in commercials and movies.
Camille Saint-Saëns despised his music (even though he imitated his style).
His father died when he was a little boy.
He became a professional organist at seventeen.
He influenced other (better) composers like Tchaikovsky and Debussy.
One critic wrote that he ‘changed the face of ballet writing for the orchestra.’
He set his operas and ballets in the Far East, allowing repressed audiences of the time to watch half-naked dancers in the context of high art.
The duet from ‘Lakmé’ accompanies a sexy lesbian scene in the vampire movie ‘The Hunger.’
