Musician

The Resume

    (February 21, 1893-June 2, 1987)
    Born in Linares, Spain
    Classical guitarist
Best known for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach
Granted the title Marquess of Salobrena (1981)
Received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1986)

Why he might be annoying:

Despite making many changes to the works he performed, he berated his students if they changed his fingerings when they played.
Fellow classical guitarist John Williams called him 'a very limited teacher and a limited musician.'
He had a falling out with his friend Pablo Casals over his visits to Franco's Spain.
When he was 68, he married a 22-year-old student.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father, wanting him to follow a career in law, broke two of his guitars before letting him become a musician.
He said, 'I was determined to win the guitar a respected place in the great music schools along with the piano, the violin and other concert instruments.'
He was known for producing a 'Segovia hush' in even large venues like Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall.
He continued playing into his 90s, noting, 'I will have an eternity to rest.'
