The Resume

    (May 19, 1940-September 29, 2002)
    Born in Houston, Texas
Birth name was Milton Newbury, Jr.
    Singer/songwriter
Recorded the albums ‘Harlequin Melodies’ (1968), ‘Looks Like Rain’ (1969), ‘Frisco Mabel Jones’ (1971), ‘Heaven Help the Child’ (1973), ‘Lovers’ (1975), ‘Rusty Tracks’ (1977), ‘The Sailor’ (1979), ‘After All These Years’ (1981), ‘In a New Age’ (1988), ‘Lulled by the Moonlight’ (1996), and ‘A Long Road Home’ (2002)
Recorded the single ‘An American Trilogy’ (1972)
Wrote Kenny Rogers’ first hit single, ‘Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)’ (1967)

Why he might be annoying:

    He suffered from depression.
He was a one-hit wonder, with ’An American Trilogy’ his only Top 40 single.
Although many ‘outlaw’ country musicians called him an inspiration, he complained, ‘It's just categorizing again, making a new pigeon-hole to stick somebody into. You got to be dressed a certain way, you got to be a drinker and a hell-raiser, cuss and make an ass of yourself.’

Why he might not be annoying:

‘An American Trilogy’ became the big showstopper of Elvis Presley’s ‘70s concerts.
Kris Kristofferson said, ‘I learned more about songwriting from him than any other writer... He was my hero and still is.’
He got namechecked in Waylon Jennings’ ‘Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)’: ‘Between Hank Williams’ pain songs, Newbury’s train songs, and ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.’’
At the time of his induction (1980), he was the youngest person in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
